Salem man serving time for Roanoke stabbing

A Salem man accused of stabbing someone last summer, about a month after he was charged in a shooting outside a Roanoke convenience store, was sentenced Tuesday to the time he had already served in prison, which is approximately 11 months.

Jaliyl Saalim Clinton, 34, was being held Tuesday morning at the Roanoke City Adult Detention Center. But as of Tuesday afternoon, he was no longer listed in the facility's online inmate database.

On May 12, 2023, a man was shot outside a convenience store in the 1900 block of 10th Street Northwest, police reported. According to court documents, investigators used surveillance video to identify a suspicious vehicle, which they traced to Clinton. Officers arrested him at a hotel later that day and charged him with intentional wounding and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

About a month later, on June 15, in Roanoke General District Court, Clinton was scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing. But Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Alyssa Gilbert said the shooting victim did not show up and a motion to temporarily drop both charges was granted.

But five days after the shooting charges were dropped, Clinton was arrested again. On June 20, police responded to a stabbing at the southeast intersection of Dale Avenue and 18th Street, Gilbert said during Clinton's plea hearing in Roanoke Circuit Court on Tuesday.

Officers found a man in the area with a stab wound to the back of his right shoulder, Gilbert said. The man told police he and Clinton got into a physical argument at a nearby residence.

The injured man gave police a description of Clinton and said the suspect began walking on Dale Avenue, Gilbert said. Officers quickly located Clinton, wearing the clothing described by the victim, with blood on his hands.

When Clinton was arrested, Gilbert said, police found on him a small baggie containing what forensic analysts determined was cocaine. He was ultimately charged with intentional wounding in connection with the stabbing, as well as possession of cocaine.

Clinton's attorney, Roanoke-area attorney Aaron Houchens, said Tuesday that if Clinton's case had gone to trial, he would have had a strong case for self-defense in connection with the stabbing.

“I'm very, very happy that you've appointed me a legitimate lawyer,” Clinton told Judge David Carson. “He provided excellent advice.”

Gilbert said she tried to meet the stabbing victim but was unable to make contact with him. So Carson agreed to a motion to temporarily drop the stabbing charge against Clinton.

For the cocaine charge, Carson sentenced Clinton, per his plea agreement, to five years of incarceration, suspended after the time he had already served. Once released, Clinton will be subject to two years of unsupervised probation.

“You have almost four years hanging over your head, so don’t come back, okay?” » said Carson.

But Clinton may still face charges related to the convenience store shooting.

“The police department has indicated that it will send the firearm used in this shooting to the laboratory for DNA testing (and will let us know if conclusive DNA evidence comes back for possible indictments),” Gilbert said in an email. Tuesday afternoon.
