Sacramento Sheriff Releases Video Showing Gunman Shot While Fleeing In Parking Lot

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office released a nearly four-minute edited and narrated video Friday that shows surveillance and body-worn camera footage of the moment a deputy shot an armed man who was fleeing into south of Sacramento in March. The video shows the man, identified as Marquis Chapple, confronting the officer when he was shot twice as he ran from the deputy. Several other bystanders can be seen in the area during the March 5 shooting at 8:30 p.m. in a shopping center parking lot near Fruitridge Road and Odea Drive. This video may be disturbing to some viewers. Here's where you can watch it if you choose to do so. Sacramento County Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Amar Gandhi says in the video that three detectives working with the gang enforcement unit in an unmarked black SUV saw a silver sedan with an expired registration on the road around 8:25 p.m. The police followed the vehicle after it arrived in the parking lot. They activated their emergency lights to stop traffic when it appeared the hatchback was trying to leave. The footage shows Chapple exiting the passenger side hatch. Gandhi says in the video that the lead detective observed the man with a gun in his left hand pointed at him. It is difficult to distinguish the direction of the gun in the corresponding images. The video then shows Chapple running away with a detective running behind him in pursuit and shooting Chapple. Of the three bullets fired, one bullet hit Chapple in the right torso and the other in the left buttock, according to Gandhi. The officer who shot Chapple has worked at the sheriff's office since 2016. The video then shows Chapple on the ground and a deputy restraining his arms. Gandhi claims deputies immediately began providing medical aid until firefighters arrived, but the released video does not show those moments. Chapple was taken to the hospital and then booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail after being medically cleared. Gandhi said a Glock-style handgun with a loaded 30-round extended-capacity magazine was recovered next to Chapple. The driver of the car, Alejandro Cervantes-Ramino, and another passenger were released at that time. But days later, detectives executing a search warrant at Cervantes' home recovered a rifle, three handguns, ammunition and cash. He was taken into custody on several criminal charges, the sheriff's office said. The edited video states that a full video of the incident is available on the sheriff's office website. KCRA 3 reached out to see where that is. The Sheriff's Office says investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division are ongoing. The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office will conduct an independent review. For more on California's top news stories, click here | Download our app.
