RV fire sparks Ironwood Fire, partially closes I-17 near Cordes Lakes

CORDES LAKES, AZ (AZFamily)— An RV fire Friday sparked a wildfire and is causing a traffic jam for drivers trying to escape the Phoenix heat on Interstate 17.

Officials said that sparked the Ironwood Fire, which burned 50 acres just east of the highway near Cordes Lakes. The buildings are less than 400 meters from the flames.

Residents of Cordes Lakes are asked to be able to evacuate at any time.

The RV caught fire on the right shoulder of the highway on the north side around 4 p.m., the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.

Officers said everyone got out of the RV safely, but the munitions started exploding.

No one was hurt.

Firefighters, in the air and on the ground, are battling the Ironwood Fire.

Northbound I-17 is closed and police have not said when it will reopen.

Cordes Lakes is generally located about an hour north of Phoenix. However, with this closure, traffic is blocked for at least 10 miles.

It's unclear what exactly led to the camper fire.
