Russia launches satellite space weapon; Cramer explains what this means for the future

BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – This week, Russia launched an anti-space satellite weapon and U.S. officials said it was in the path of a U.S. satellite.

This is not the first time that this weapon has been mentioned. In February, a member of the House Intelligence Committee announced this new national security threat.

Senator Kevin Cramer says an offensive weapon's capabilities in space are designed to close space. He says if you were to take some kind of space nuclear weapon and detonate it, it would cause a blackout in space.

Cramer said that would mean GPS, electronic banking and the economy would all grind to a halt. He says this would affect not only the United States, but also our allies and adversaries.

Cramer said the consequences would be so devastating that such a weapon is unlikely to be used.

“We must be equally prepared and equally capable of doing the same thing, bearing in mind that today's deterrence is largely nuclear deterrence. When there is mutual destruction, it often deters allies and adversaries from doing something really stupid,” Cramer said.

However, Cramer said Russia was a desperate state and if it ever unleashed all of its weapons systems, it would be a force to be reckoned with.
