Ruidoso, New Mexico, reaches 7,000 acres, 0 percent contained, updated Monday, May 27

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Blue 2 Fire grew to nearly 7,000 acres with 0% containment as of Monday, May 27, according to the New Mexico State Division of Forestry.

The fire is located in the White Mountain Wilderness area, 8 miles north of Ruidoso.

The fire grew to 6,863 acres and was started by lightning on May 16, according to the Division of Forestry.

The Forestry Division says the fire continues to burn due to high temperatures and drought. However, this has changed little.

The Forestry Division says 532 personnel are currently on site with 23 engines, four helicopters and two bulldozers.

“Firefighters are working day and night to put out the fire. Firefighters continue to build protective lines using hand tools and bulldozers. Aerial resources are dropping water and fire retardants to slow the progress of the fire and reinforce fire lines. During nighttime operations, firefighters perform burning operations to consume fuel between the fire line and the fire boundary. This tactic helps strengthen the fire line and reduce fire movement. Firefighters placed sprinklers and hoses around homes to protect structures,” the Forestry Division said.
