Rome man sets fire to house he wanted his mother to sell, killing mother-in-law – 95.5 WSB

FLOYD COUNTY, Ga. — A 26-year-old Rome man was arrested after police say he intentionally set a house on fire and killed his mother-in-law.

On Saturday, around 9:30 p.m., Rome Police were called to reports of a fire at a house on Addington Court. When police arrived, they learned a woman was trapped inside. Flames were coming out of the roof and around the front door.

Police said they saw a shirtless man on the side of the road. The man was identified as 26-year-old Timothy Edward Lary.

Authorities said the resident of the home grabbed the officer and told him, “He started the fire and my wife is inside!” I want him to go to jail,” pointing to Lary on the side of the road.

The officers asked Lary, “Did you set the house on fire?” He replied, “Yes, I did.”

Police said the resident was Lary's father and that he and his wife had rented the land from Lary's mother. He told police his son “had been angry all day, losing his temper.”

The father said Lary thought the land should belong to him and wanted his mother to sell it, so he could have the money and live on his own.

Lary allegedly threatened to set the house on fire while his father and stepmother were at work. His father said Lary took a pile of papers and started a fire by throwing them on the mattress in his room.

The father said he yelled at his wife to get out of the house, but she wasn't there when he came out.

Once the fire was extinguished, the body of the victim, aged 70, as well as two cats and a dog were found in the back bedroom.

Lary was arrested and charged with neglect of a disabled adult and/or elderly person, three counts of cruelty to animals, three counts of arson, criminal damage to property and two counts of assault serious and murder.

He was booked into the Floyd County Jail.
