Robert Trujillo recalls joining Ozzy Osbourne's band after jamming Black Sabbath songs as a teenager

Robert Trujillo reflected on coming full circle by joining Ozzy Osbourne's band after looking up to him as a teenager.

Trujillo played with Osbourne from 1996 to 2003, before joining Metallica. Growing up as an Osbourne fan, he couldn't believe his luck when he finally got to perform in front of him.

In a video of Dunlop alongside fellow bassist Marcus Miller, the two begin to talk about their inspirations and mentors. “I used to play Black Sabbath songs and Ozzy Osbourne solo songs like Crazy trainand, you know, all those bits at backyard parties when I was 16,” Trujillo begins.

“And then all of a sudden I'm playing in his band, you know, and I'm in front of the guy. And I'm like, “Wait a minute, am I dreaming?” And the cool thing about him is he loved the bass. So he said to me, 'Rob, listen, I want you to play as hard as you want to play.' [he says, imitating Osbourne’s accent] I said to myself: “Yes! I found my man.

“What I can say though,” he continues, “is that almost every musician I've worked with [with] loves the instrument. Whether it's too loud on stage or whatever, the bass is always something very important and vital to any composition I've been a part of, including Metallica.

“Cliff Burton, he brought the bass to the fore and had a melodic phrasing and a voice for this music and genre that wasn't supposed to present the bass that way.”

In other Osbourne-related news, former Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler recently said he's in contact with Osbourne “every day,” and that a Sabbath reunion isn't out of the question. However, there are many factors that need to be considered before it can move forward, including Osbourne's health.

Robert Trujillo continues touring with Metallica.
