Roanoke Valley Crime Summary: Checkpoint; thrown weapon

Roanoke Valley law enforcement reported the following:

Arrests at the joint checkpoint

Around midnight Monday, Roanoke Rapids Police Officer M. Morris was participating in a checkpoint with the Halifax County Sheriff's Office at Hinson Street and Branch Avenue. Roanoke Rapids Chief Shane Guyant said Morris met Kenziah Kenaz Scott, 18, of Roanoke Rapids.

Morris smelled marijuana inside the vehicle.

When Morris asked about the smell, Scott handed the officer a bag.

When Morris asked about weapons, Scott said there were none.

As Scott exited the vehicle to search for probable cause, he pulled out a handgun hidden under a jacket in the front seat and placed it on the dashboard.

Scott was placed under arrest and had another bag of marijuana in his possession.

A magistrate charged him with carrying a concealed weapon and possession of Schedule IV.

He was given a $1,000 bond and a court date of July 19.

At approximately 1:30 a.m., Lt. M. Brown of the Sheriff's Office encountered Anthony Lamar King, 54 of Roanoke Rapids.

Brown informed Roanoke Rapids DA Lt. Newsome that King appeared to be impaired.

Newsome performed standardized field sobriety tests on King and determined he was impaired, then gave a 0.09 breath sample to the police department.

For the DWI charge, he was given a $1,000 bond and a court date of July 8.

HCSO Arrest

Captain Scott Hall of the Sheriff's Office reported that on Saturday around 2 a.m. Deputy K. Taylor conducted a traffic stop in the southbound lane of Interstate 95 for a registration violation.

Sceva Javan Kendall Jr., 24, of Roanoke Rapids, was driving the vehicle.

Taylor learned that Kendall threw a gun from the vehicle during the stop.

Kendall was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, simple possession of Schedule VI, possession of marijuana paraphernalia, and driving with a revoked license.

He was given an $8,000 secured bond and a court date of June 27.
