Riverside County Sheriff's Deputies Share Tips Against Common Scams

News Channel 3 tracked a grand theft scam targeting unsuspecting victims.

The most recent scam occurred Monday in the 34000 block of Monterey Avenue in Palm Desert.

That's where a victim reported to Riverside County Sheriff's deputies that her necklace had been stolen after she helped a stranger who asked for directions.

The victim said a woman approached him and asked for directions to the highway. After helping her, the suspect placed a collar around the victim's neck and got into the passenger seat of a vehicle. As the vehicle drove away, the victim noticed that her necklace had been stolen and replaced with costume jewelry.

MPs tell us a series of similar thefts also took place in 2023.
