Riverside bike thief arrested in Berwyn

A man was arrested in Berwyn on May 20 after stealing a bicycle from an unlocked garage in Riverside.

Two officers were dispatched around 7.40pm that evening to the intersection of Southcote Road and Selborne Road after reports of a man attempting to enter the yards. Police say a witness told one of the officers at the scene that he saw the man in question walk into a garage on Selborne Road and leave the house on a bicycle. The witness gave police a description of the man. Someone on the corner of 26th Street and Harlem Avenue told police they saw a man matching that description heading east.

Police later found the man at the corner of Cermak Road and Ridgeland Avenue in Berwyn. A police officer brought in the witness who had seen the man enter a garage, who confirmed that it was the same man. The man was arrested and taken to the police station.

Police contacted the owner of the bike, worth approximately $480, who asked him to sign a complaint. The homeowner said he left the bike in his unlocked garage and provided police with door camera footage of the man looking into the homeowner's house before stealing the bike.

The man was read his Miranda warning around 8:50 p.m. and was placed in a cell after refusing to answer questions. Criminal charges for the case were approved around 2:45 a.m. the next morning. The man was later tried and released, with a court date set for May 28.

Arrested for driving with suspended license and arrest warrant

A woman was arrested May 18 in Riverside after a police officer saw her driving without a seat belt.

Police say an officer on patrol near the intersection of Ogden Avenue and Harlem Avenue saw the woman driving without wearing a seat belt. So they maneuvered behind the woman's car and stopped her in a parking space at the 7-Eleven at the intersection. . When the officer asked for her driver's license and proof of insurance, the woman said she had neither. The officer ran her name and date of birth against the police database, which revealed that she had a warrant out for her arrest in DeKalb County, as well as a driving license suspended.

The officer arrested the woman around 7:30 p.m. that evening. Her car was left where it was, as it was legally parked, and the woman was taken to the police station, where she received her tickets and paperwork. A court date has been set for July 5 for his charges related to driving with a suspended license. The woman was released, as her DeKalb County arrest warrant indicated she would not be detained and a court date was set for June 6.

Woman injured during night walk

Police were dispatched to a home in the 8800 block of Burlington Avenue around 10:10 p.m. on May 20 for a report of an assault, but no one was arrested.

Police said a man called to report his girlfriend had been attacked as she walked home alone from the Irish Times. After arriving at the residence, a police officer spoke with the woman, who said she had several drinks with an Irish Times friend before returning home alone. She said she was walking east on Burlington Avenue, past the Irish Times parking lot, when an unknown person pushed her to the ground, injuring her right knee and left knuckles. The woman said she punched the man while she was on the ground, causing him to run away. She was able to describe the man to police, but could not describe what he was wearing.

Doctors arrived on scene to evaluate the woman, who signed a refusal of medical assistance.

Police noted in their report that the woman said she drank seven alcoholic drinks that evening and had slurred speech while speaking with officers. They also noted that she “altered the narrative of the incident” at times.

Another police officer reported that the woman told him she had been drinking with her friend at Phil's Sports Bar & Grill rather than at the Irish Times.

The woman told police she only wanted the incident documented and would not sign a complaint. Police told her they would review the Irish Times surveillance footage and contact her later.

In an additional police report the next morning, police said an officer reviewed surveillance footage. In it, the officer saw the woman leave Phil's and walk east, past the Irish Times. In the footage, the woman struggled to find her balance. As she walked past the Irish Times, the woman entered a blind spot for approximately nine seconds before reappearing in front of 8859 Burlington Avenue and crossing the street. In the footage, the woman continued walking east until she reached the bike rack at the Brookfield train station near Forest Avenue. As she continued walking east, about twenty meters from her residence, she was no longer visible due to the lighting. Police noted that no one could be seen approaching the woman or walking away from the area where she was seen in the footage.
