Rideshare driver killed, teen passenger injured in Portland homicide

The man who died Tuesday night in a shooting in Southeast Portland was a rideshare driver and the injured teen was his passenger, police confirmed Wednesday.

The teen is at a local hospital, police said.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting at 11:56 p.m. in the 5700 block of Southeast 130th Place in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood. When they arrived, they found the driver and his 17-year-old passenger, both injured inside the car.

The man died instantly.

No arrests have been made and police have not identified the rideshare driver or the company he worked for.

The man's death marks the 31st homicide in Portland so far this year, compared to 38 homicides at the same time last year.

A 2022 shooting in Northeast Portland killed an Uber passenger and seriously injured his driver. Earlier that year, a father of eight was shot and killed while driving for Uber.

Shards of glass remained at the scene of the shooting Wednesday morning, which a neighbor identified as coming from the rideshare driver's window.

Nichole McKay, who lives two doors down from the shattered glass, said she was awakened by a loud explosion of gunfire Tuesday night.

McKay has two young children and said it was “obviously horrible” to know that a homicide had taken place so close to his young children.

Gun violence is not common on the residential street, which is next to Gilbert Park Elementary School, McKay added.

“All of our neighbors are safe,” McKay said.
