Richmond police investigate homicide near Byrd Park

RICHMOND, Va. – A homicide investigation is underway after a shooting left one person dead near Byrd Park in Richmond, Crime Insider sources tell CBS 6 Jon Burkett.

Police responded to the 1300 block of Hampton Street shortly before 6:30 Wednesday evening, where they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Caleb Paynter, who frequents Byrd Park, said he is upset by the recent gun violence, especially in Byrd Park, where murders are rare.

“People are fed up,” Paynter said. “I've lived all around this park, I've never seen one (shootings). Maybe in the '80s on the other side of the park? But never here.”

An SUV abandoned at the crime scene was believed to have been driven by the shooter, sources said. Detectives believe the car may have had a mechanical failure. The RPD confirmed that it was studying this scenario.

“People bring their kids here every weekend. It's kids, families, everyone fishing, hanging out,” Paynter said. “It’s not what you usually see.”
