Richard Dreyfuss' alleged transphobic and misogynistic remarks have been called “disgusting” by his son.
The “Jaws” star, 76, made headlines for apparently giving a rant about transgender children and diversity on Saturday (May 25, 2024) during a ticketed screening of the horror the 1975 shark attack at the Cabot Theater in Beverly, Massachusetts.
His boy Ben Dreyfuss, 37, has now taken to social media accounts over his dad's alleged outburst saying on 'one of my close ones.'
He also joked, “Well now you know why I refused to give him the password to his own Twitter account for a decade lol.”
Ben added: “This will be my only statement on the subject. THANKS.”
Richard had Ben with his screenwriter ex-wife of 75 years, Jeramie Rain.
Video of the actor's full remarks on Saturday has not been released, but attendees of the event attacked him on social media.
One guest said on Facebook: “We left his interview tonight along with hundreds of others because of his racist, homophobic and misogynistic rant. »
One X user claimed her girlfriend's parents attended Richard's event and attached a screenshot of a text message from one of them that read: “I went off the rails saying how Barbra Streisand is a genius but he didn't listen to her because she is a woman and women shouldn't have that power.
“He then began to share his views on the Me Too movement and began to explain that you shouldn't listen to a 10-year-old who said he wanted to be a boy instead of a girl.”
And another X user claimed Richard had said at the weekend's event that “women should have no power” and should remain “quiet” and “soft”.
They added: “When asked about the #MeToo movement, he said 'these people make me want to vomit' and that he didn't want to hear eight-year-olds saying they were born in the wrong body.”
The Cabot Theater apologized for Richard's “distressing” remarks, adding in an emailed statement to attendees: “We deeply regret that Mr. Dreyfuss' comments at the event were not consistent with the values inclusiveness and respect that we defend at the Cabot Theater. .
“We understand that his remarks were distressing and offensive to many members of our community, and we sincerely apologize.”
The theater also told The Hollywood Reporter that it is “aware of and shares serious concerns following the recent event with Richard Dreyfuss.”
He added: “The opinions expressed by Mr. Dreyfuss do not reflect the values ​​of inclusion and respect that we uphold as an organization.
“We deeply regret the distress this has caused many of our customers. »
Richard has yet to publicly address the controversy.
