Retired NASCAR driver and son arrested for alleged assault on police during Jan. 6 riots

A retired NASCAR driver and his son were arrested Wednesday and charged along with two other Pennsylvania men for allegedly assaulting police during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, according to the DCUS Attorney's Office .

Tighe Scott, 75, and his son Jarret Scott, 48, each face two felony charges as well as several misdemeanor charges for a series of alleged assaults that prosecutors say they committed outside the Capitol among the pro-crowd. Trump.

Charging documents show the FBI confirmed Tighe Scott's identity in part because a witness told agents he was a retired NASCAR driver.

Scott competed in dirt racing events before joining the NASCAR Winston Cup Series in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Although he did not record any career victories in NASCAR, he finished several times in the top 10 and made several appearances at the Daytona 500, including a sixth-place finish in 1979.

Both Scotts were arrested along with another Pennsylvania father and son, Scott Alex Slater Jr. and Scott Slater Sr., all of whom prosecutors say physically and verbally harassed law enforcement who were trying to protect the Capitol – using various objects like flagpoles, golf clubs and a “Closed Area” sign to throw or hit a line of police trying to control the crowd.

The four men were seen in video footage of the Stop the Steal rally earlier the day of the riot. During the rally, according to a criminal complaint, the men went to the Capitol building and “began yelling at the line of officers who were trying to clear the area.”

Slater Jr. allegedly yelled “f— you mother—–” before throwing a flagpole and the “Closed Area” sign toward the line of officers.

The four men “resisted and confronted the police line,” the complaint states, with both Scotts allegedly plowing into the officers' shields, with the younger Scott brandishing a golf club.

At one point, Tighe Scott allegedly “tried to snatch the shield” from an officer, but was pushed back and fell backwards. Jarrett Scott was knocked down by his father's fall, the complaint states, and allegedly mocked the police, shouting several insults at them.

Neither man currently has an attorney listed. They were scheduled to make their first appearance Wednesday in federal court in Pennsylvania.

As of May 6, more than 1,424 people have been arrested in connection with the January 6 riots, of whom approximately 820 have pleaded guilty, according to the Justice Department.
