Retired Los Angeles County deputy goes missing on remote Greek island

Family and friends of a 58-year-old retired Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy who went missing three days ago on a remote Greek island are desperate for answers.

Albert Calibet went hiking Tuesday morning on the Greek island of Amorgos, a vacation destination he has visited dozens of times, and was supposed to meet up with a friend at the end of his hike.

Unfortunately, the 58-year-old, whom his friends describe as a kind and generous man who makes friends easily, never showed up for the meeting with his friend.

“Time is running out and we feel like we're wasting time,” family friend Robin Wynston Lynn told KTLA's John Fenoglio.

Of great concern to friends and family is that Calibet is an experienced hiker who has hiked the island's rugged terrain several times.

“He is in good physical shape,” said his sister-in-law Sandrine Cutright. “He swims every day, he runs.”

In Hermosa Beach, relatives receive most of their news via a WhatsApp group chat thread. Calibets' friends in Amorgos say that so far the Greek authorities' limited search efforts have failed.

“There are so few resources on the island and [especially] on this part of the island,” Lynn said. “There is no airport, there are only 2,000 people. It's half the size of Catalina.

Cutright explained that search and rescue teams can't search at night because the terrain is too dangerous, suggesting that if they could get a night vision drone that detects heat, it could help in the search.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna released a statement on the 58-year-old's disappearance, saying in part:

“We are actively working with several agencies overseas to provide assistance in the search for Deputy Calibet and will use every resource we have to bring him back to those who love him.”

Meanwhile, the retired MP's brother Oliver, along with other friends in Europe, rush to the island to help with the search, as they know time is running out.

“He’s hurt somewhere and he needs to be brought home now,” Lynn said through tears. “Anyone who hears this story and has resources, please come help us save our friend Albert. Send the ordeal to Albert Calibet.

While the 58-year-old was retired, he continued to work for the LASD Transportation Services Office and his family wanted to share his story in hopes that someone could provide resources to help him to look for it in Greece.
