Residents react after deadly shooting in Belmont – NBC Bay Area

Residents are reacting after a man was shot Friday night in a Belmont neighborhood.

The shooting happened around 8 p.m. near Hiller and Irwin streets. Residents told NBC Bay Area on Saturday that they heard three gunshots and saw bullet holes in a car parked in the area.

Thomas Martin, who lives in the area, described what he heard before police arrived.

“I heard what sounded like three gunshots,” he said. “I thought maybe it was fireworks, but 10 to 20 minutes later the paramedics were performing chest compressions on a man on the ground.”

Belmont police said a 27-year-old man died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.

Residents told NBC Bay Area it appeared the victim was parked in a black sedan and they noticed damage to the car's front windshield.

“I saw gunshots through the window,” Martin said.

The San Mateo County Crime Lab was on scene Friday evening as investigators collected evidence. Police said they were investigating several leads and believed this was an isolated incident.

Homicides in Belmont are rare. One of the recent incidents occurred in 2019, when a teenager was shot dead outside an elementary school.

Friday's incident occurred in a usually quiet residential neighborhood, a short walk from O'Donnell Park, where children often visit the playground. Manoj Agrawal told NBC Bay Area Saturday evening that he was walking there her dog frequently and said the shooting increased her concerns about her family's safety.

“We are a family with two children. I have a son and a daughter and we come here every evening. So it’s scary to know there was a homicide,” he said.

The San Mateo County Coroner's Office has not released the victim's name. Belmont Police are asking anyone who traveled to the area Friday evening with an active dash cam to contact them.
