Rescuers fear missing celebrity diet guru lost in dangerous cave on Greek island

The search for British television doctor Michael Mosley, who went missing on the Greek island of Symi on Wednesday, has reportedly been limited to a cave known ominously by locals as “the Abyss”.

Mosley's wife, Clare Bailey, began raising the alarm on Wednesday evening after Mosley failed to return by 7:30 p.m. from a walk he had taken six hours earlier.

Authorities began searching for Mosley that evening, thinking he may have fallen during his walk. “Nothing at this stage can be ruled out,” said a police source. The daily mail, THURSDAY. Mosley was last seen on a St. Nikolas beach at 1:30 p.m., according to Facebook group user Symi who posted a photo of him. Authorities and search teams scoured the coast but found no sign of him.

Authorities now believe Mosley disappeared into the mountains, which are home to a vast network of dangerous caves. “It’s like a deep tunnel system, but it’s filled with water and can stretch for miles. Despite the scorching heat, firefighters are reportedly searching the cave system for Mosley. Nikitas Gryllis, deputy mayor of Symi, told local media that the mountainous area where Mosley disappeared is particularly difficult to search.

“It’s a strange area, a mountain with many blind and dangerous spots, which must be covered meter by meter,” Gryllis said. Rescue workers reportedly feared Mosley “had taken a wrong turn” somewhere, with one saying it was now “a race against time” to save him. Mosley's wife, meanwhile, vowed not to “give up hope” and said the past three days had been “the longest and most unbearable days” for the entire family.

Mosley is a dieting guru known for his popularization of the “5:2 diet.” Mosley says that five days of eating and two days of cutting calories per week can lead to dramatic weight loss.

Celebrities such as Benedict Cumberbatch, Jimmy Kimmel and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak have previously used the 5:2 diet.
