Rescue agencies searching for missing swimmer at Kure Beach

Kure Beach Fire Department received a call just after noon

KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) – Officials with the Kure Beach Fire Department say they received a call for a missing swimmer at 12:11 p.m. near the 100 Block of Atlantic Ave, right by the Kure Beach Pier.

Kure Beach lifeguards were in the water assisting other swimmers when a male victim nearby went missing.

The Kure Beach Fire Department, along with the Kure Beach Ocean Rescue immediately began conducting line searches. A large response ensued that included multiple local and federal agencies.

Kure Beach and Carolina Beach Police departments conducted sweeps up and down the beach strand and multiple aerial drones were deployed.

The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office and Wilmington Police Department deployed search watercraft and dive teams.

The Sunny Point Fire Department and Wilmington Fire Department responded with search watercraft capable of conducting underwater sonar and divers.

Additionally, the US Coast Guard responded with search watercraft capable of underwater sonar as well as a search and rescue helicopter.

Additional searches are being conducted by multiple agencies currently and will continue throughout the evening.
