Republicans withdraw support for Marisa Simonetti following arrest for domestic assault

After being arrested earlier this month, Marisa Simonetti lost support from Republicans in the 3rd Congressional District.

On Friday, a statement was released by Randy Sutter, chairman of the 3rd Congressional District Republican Party, saying they had withdrawn their candidacy in the Hennepin County Commissioner special election.

Sutter also said the party did not recommend her for Hennepin County District 6 commissioner, which she is currently campaigning for. The decision comes after Simonetti's June 21 arrest in Edina on charges of fifth-degree assault and domestic violence.

In his full statement, Sutter said Simonetti did not reflect his party's values ​​and said his portrayal of being a Republican embarrassed them:

“In consultation with our nominating committee, I am announcing that the Republicans of the 3rd Congressional District do not endorse or recommend Marisa Simonetti for any elected office in this district. Simonetti does not reflect our values. By running as a Republican, she has only served to embarrass the Republican Party.”
