Red Cross called to rescue 8 people, including 6 children, after apartment fire in Orlando

ORLANDO, Florida. – The American Red Cross was called Saturday to rescue eight people, including six children, following a fire in an Orlando apartment, according to firefighters.

Orlando firefighters were called to the 4000 block of Raleigh Street, where a fire had been reported in one of the three-story Timber Sound Apartments buildings.

In a statement, firefighters said a stove fire activated the sprinklers.

News 6 went to the scene and spoke with Hattie Glenn, who said she was there to visit her granddaughter.

“I'm in the room talking to him and then I heard something popping, like popcorn or something, and I ran into the kitchen and everything (the stove) was on fire , the fire was just coming out of the stove,” Glenn said. , recalling that two adults and three children were in the unit when it happened. “I yelled at them, 'Fire, everyone get out,' and everyone started running away because it was full of smoke.”

According to Glenn, the Red Cross had been contacted but had not yet responded to the scene.

“Clothes, food, furniture, everything, everything,” Glenn said of what was lost in the fire. “Everywhere in the house, every room was flooded, it’s like a storm came in and flooded your house.”

Glenn said his granddaughter had reported problems with the stove in the past, wondering why it hadn't yet been replaced after several suspected fires.

“The firefighters said it was because of the grease, because she was complaining about her stove, this is the third time she has had a fire because of this stove, I don't know why they didn't haven't bought him a new stove or they've tried to fix it and it's no use,” she said. “…We really need a place to go.”

This is a developing story. Check back here for updates.
