Rebecca Grossman to be sentenced in fatal crash

Rebecca Grossman is scheduled to be sentenced Monday for a hit-and-run that killed two brothers in Westlake Village in 2020.

Prosecutors are asking for 34 years to life in prison, while Grossman's lawyers are asking the judge for just over 12 years in prison or probation.

In February, Grossman was convicted of second-degree murder and vehicular manslaughter in the deaths of Mark and Jacob Iskander.

City News Service reported that in a letter to the judge, Grossman wrote: “…I am not a murderer and I ask you to acknowledge this true fact.” My pain, my recognition of the pain that the Iskanders suffer and the pain that I see my family endure are punishments that I already suffer and will suffer for the rest of my life.

On June 3, a judge denied a motion for a new trial for Grossman. Grossman's attorney, James Spertus, told reporters there was not enough evidence at trial.

“She was involved in a terrible tragedy, a terrible accident and we hope the sentence reflects those circumstances,” he said. “The court has wide discretion in sentencing and we hope that it will convict the mother and human being who has now been convicted of murder and we are very optimistic that the Court of Appeal will recognize that the court based its decision on an interpretation of the law, not the facts, which we believe to be wrong.

Julie Cohen, who spoke on behalf of the boys' parents last week, said the family hopes this matter is over.

“Hopefully, after almost four years, we will emerge from this justice system and begin the process of healing and doing good deeds in the name of Mark and Jacob,” she said.

Grossman has been behind bars since the verdict.
