Rebecca Grossman sentenced for the accident that cost the lives of the Iskander brothers

A judge on Monday sentenced Rebecca Grossman to 15 years to life in prison stemming from a crash that killed two Westlake Village brothers nearly four years ago.

Grossman, 60, was driving her white Mercedes SUV at 73 mph in a 45 mph zone when she hit Mark Iskander and Jacob on September 29, 2020. The boys, aged 11 and 8, were crossing the road with their mother and their younger brother. . After the crash, Grossman, of Hidden Hills, did not stop until Mercedes safety devices cut off the fuel, prosecutors said.

In addition to second-degree murder, a jury found Grossman guilty of two counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and hit-and-run driving. She faces a maximum sentence of 34 years to life in prison.

Judge Joseph Brandolino sentenced her to 15 years to life in prison for the two murder counts and 3 years for the hit-and-run charge; everything must work simultaneously.

Prosecutors seek maximum sentence against Grossman

On Monday, attorneys' descriptions of Grossman differed dramatically at his sentencing.

Prosecutors described her as remorseless and lacking in respect for the rule of law. She never apologized or admitted guilt, Assistant District Attorney Ryan Gould said Monday. She blamed others and repeatedly violated court orders, he said.

“It wasn’t a tragic accident,” Gould said. “This was a preventable murder.”

The prosecution asked the judge to impose two consecutive sentences of 15 years to life in prison and an additional four years for the hit-and-run charge.

Grossman's lawyers, who told the court of a mother and philanthropist who grew up amid hardship and abuse, asked that she be given probation. She was not given the opportunity to express her remorse to the Iskanders because of court orders prohibiting contact, her lawyer Samuel Josephs told the judge. His actions the night of the accident were consistent with those of a person in complete shock, he said.
