Readers talk about this year's Knicks, regulating social media and the sheriff's deadly force

This season's Knicks give New Yorkers hope again

Huntington, LI: As the Daily News' front-page headline blurted out “Broken Hands, Broken Hearts” (May 20) to aptly describe how our Knicks were eliminated in a dramatic Game 7 loss to the Indiana Pacers at Madison Square Garden in front of a sold-out crowd, I have to make the case that something else far more significant and significant was happening within MSG and on this Knickerbocker team.

These Knicks weren't just a team, but for all their success, it seemed like no one cared who got the credit. Their outward love and respect for each other and the paying customer was a common thread. Despite all of their team's injuries, challenges and adversity, they never made excuses; they practiced endlessly by showing up for work every day – the personification of the glory of the blue-collar workers who built this city.

There is a deeper reason why this team has connected our collective consciousness. Retailers are fleeing in record numbers; crime is relentless; people with mental illness, homelessness, and illegal immigration remain pervasive problems, while simply getting along and having an open debate of ideas on college campuses causes chaos and crisis . We are devoid of real political leadership because we are hostage to two parties, but our history shows that we will get through this cycle. The city saw this miracle on 34th Street this season as it personified and reminded us of the potential glory of our glorious melting pot. Undermanned and relentless, these Knicks showed us that their heart and soul transcended skill and helped win our ardent hearts, leaving us longing for more togetherness and sanity. Heaven in Gotham. Let's bottle it. Chris N. Karalekas

Not monolithic

Fort Myers, Florida: Regarding “Getting Help for the Mentally Ill” (editorial, May 26): It's best to avoid “the” mentally ill, like “the” blacks. View the latest AP guidelines. Harold A. Maio

Airplane ID

Brooklyn: The plane in the inset photo on page 10 (“Magic in the air over Long Is.”, May 26) is a P-51 Mustang, not a Spitfire. Ray Palermo

A hollow vacation

Brooklyn: I believe Memorial Day has lost much of its significance since it was moved to the last Monday in May. I don't think the majority of people take the time to commemorate what that means. It's just a three-day weekend with no work, punctuated by sales and barbecues. The birthdays of MLK and George Washington were also transformed into commercial events. I hope Memorial Day, if not others, returns to its original date of May 30, whatever day of the week it falls on. And please stop wishing people a “Happy Memorial Day” because it’s not supposed to be a happy occasion. It is a day of remembrance and honor for those who lost their lives for our country – in my opinion, one of the most important days on the calendar. L. Veneroni

Defecation station

Brooklyn: Being a proud homeowner in Brooklyn and keeping my property as clean and neat as possible, because of a recent gift from our Mayor Adams, is no longer entirely possible. The city installed not one but two trees in front of my property. The dogs in my neighborhood are absolutely thrilled because they found a new place to defecate, so thank you, Mayor. Oh, and by the way, I was told I could get free tree guards from the city by calling the special phone number, which I called and was told for a $900 donation (the minimum per tree), I could get the guards I want. I think the city has better things to do with our tax dollars. Marie Somoza

Internet protection

Albany: As we head toward the end of the state legislative session, we need to pass two critical Internet safety bills, the Stop Addictive Feeds Exploitation for Kids Act (SAFE Act) and the protection of children's data. The SAFE Act aims to “prohibit social media platforms from providing addictive foods to children under 18 without parental consent and prohibits social media platforms from refusing non-addictive foods products or services when this consent is not obtained”, while the Children's Data Act The Data Protection Act would significantly reign in the collection of Internet data on young people. Children and adolescents now spend more than five hours a day on their screens. They lack physical activity, social interaction and healthy rest. Parents, teachers, therapists, educators, and social service professionals are concerned about the uncontrolled world of social media influences and the uncertain future that awaits us if we don't put a stop to it now. William T. Gettman Jr.

Middle East ally

Kolahoo, Pakistan: The tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and others has drawn an outpouring of condolences from around the world, including Pakistan. The country's army chief, General Asim Munir, quickly contacted his Iranian counterpart to offer condolences and reward the late leaders as notable friends of Pakistan. This gesture shows how much Pakistan values its relations with Iran. Even Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif specifically visited Iran to offer his condolences, emphasizing the strong ties between the two countries. The cooperation between their militaries is a testament to their deep ties. Hammal Zahid

Threat to freedom

Brooklyn: Are Donald Trump Voters Just Stupid? And are the Republicans a bunch of cowards and traitors? Let's remember that not only did Trump do nothing about COVID, but he fired one White House employee after another who urged him to do something. Let's not forget that not only did Trump do nothing, but he even had the supplies ordered returned to the states from which they came. He doesn't even have respect for veterans. Just look at the way he attacked the late Senator John McCain for being a prisoner of war. And he tells us lies about actually winning the election. It was the fastest case in history to be thrown out by the nation's highest court. And get this: if he is elected, he wants everyone to swear an oath to him! Research Project 2025 and read about its plan to destroy freedom in America as we know it. David Raisman

Clownish behavior

Manhattan: Regarding voice Grace Fornatora's “outrage” over Trump supporters in the Bronx being called clowns by the governor. Hochul: I've never been a big fan of Hochul, but she's certainly not a liar. Only a clown would bring murder suspects to his rally. Hillary Clinton understood it well then and Hochul still understands it today: he and his supporters are the worst our society has to offer. Deplorable is not categorical enough. I noticed that your outrage at the insults was not strong enough to stop you from calling those who don't support him “lib trash.” So hold on to your indignation, ma'am. He was trash then, he is now and the best part is he will go down in history as the worst president we have ever had. TS Fallani

Free to go

Manalapan, NJ: So, Donnie says he had to stay in New York to be “close to the trial.” The court was not in session Friday, all weekend or Memorial Day. Four days to go all over the country to campaign. Just more “they’re after me” whining. To grow. Joe Fontanelli

Armed incident

Brooklyn: Some people are complaining that the sheriff of Okaloosa County, Florida, should not have shot Senior Airman Roger Fortson because Fortson's gun was not pointed at the sheriff. How long does it take for someone to raise a gun and shoot? A split second ? Is the sheriff supposed to risk his own life and wait to see if Fortson raises his gun? Of course not. It's easy to question a sheriff who has a split second to determine whether his own life is in danger. The sheriff had every right to shoot. And why would someone who knows a sheriff knock on the door holding a gun in the first place? Fortson put his own life in danger out of sheer stupidity. Josh Greenberger
