RCMP seize 439 catalytic converters in B.C. theft and trafficking investigation

BURNABY, BC — Mounties in Burnaby, B.C., say they have called in undercover officers as part of a lengthy investigation into hundreds of stolen catalytic converters they believe were destined for the United States.

The RCMP said in a news release that its officers used search warrants on June 1, 2023, at four locations linked to a man, including his home, his business and an industrial construction site.

Police say they found 439 catalytic converters, which are part of a vehicle's exhaust system, and most of them are believed to have been stolen, including 392 pre-packaged for shipment to the United States.

British Columbia police are warning of an increase in thefts of catalytic converters in many communities because they contain precious metals that can be lucrative for thieves.

Mounties allege the man ran a mobile metal recycling business, which salvaged vehicles and legitimately shipped the converters across the border in bulk, but also bought and sold stolen equipment.

He is now charged with attempted possession and trafficking in property obtained by crime.

According to the release, the Insurance Corporation of BC, the province's public auto insurance agency, estimates that in the first seven months of 2023, catalytic converter theft triggered approximately $8.2 million in claims.

It is estimated that in 2022, 725 catalytic converters were stolen in Burnaby.
