Rapides Sheriff's Office Names Douglas Coleman Man Who Died in Jail

A 52-year-old Alexandria man suffered a medical emergency and died while in the downtown jail early Saturday morning, according to the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office.

Douglas Obrian Coleman, 52, was found in a dormitory at Rapides Parish Detention Center No. 1 around 3 a.m., unconscious and not breathing, a news release said.

MPs and medical personnel began helping him, including giving him Narcan in case of a possible drug overdose, it says. They were still working on him when Acadian Ambulance personnel arrived and took over.

But Coleman could not be revived and he was pronounced dead around 3:54 a.m.

An investigation has been opened into the death. Coleman was jailed Friday evening on contempt of court, animal cruelty and drug charges. He was examined by medical staff and moved to a dormitory, according to the statement.

“No evidence of foul play was found during the initial investigation and, based on the evidence collected at that time, it appears that Coleman suffered a tragic medical emergency.” read.

An autopsy will be performed and toxicology results are awaited. An investigation continues.
