Rape conviction, migrant charged in NYPD shooting, tax fraud

A Spring Valley man will spend 25 years in state prison on multiple rape charges. The Rockland County District Attorney's Office says that in September 2022, Rigoberto Lopez Castro forcibly raped a woman he knew. He was convicted of three violent crimes: two rapes and burglary.

A Venezuelan migrant is facing multiple charges after allegedly shooting two NYPD officers Monday in Queens. Police identified the suspect as Bernardo Raul Castro Mata, who they said is part of a moped theft ring operating in the municipality. Officers Richard Yarusso and Christopher Abreu were shot while responding to a call. Both officers are expected to recover. Castro Mata faces 17 charges, including attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

Two partners at a Westchester-based accounting firm have pleaded guilty to tax fraud conspiracy. George Sanossian and Jack Sardis, CPAs and partners in a Scarsdale accounting firm, conspired to fraudulently reduce their clients' income and payroll taxes, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. They hid the salaries paid to employees by customers. Sanossian's sentencing is scheduled for September 24. Sardis is scheduled to be sentenced on September 26.
