Raleigh Dead End | Wake County Sheriff's Office provides update on man who shot deputy at Oaks Apartments barricade

WAKE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) — The Wake County Sheriff's Office is expected to provide an update on a deputy who shot a man who was kicked out of his apartment but refused to leave.

The shooting happened hours after deputies arrived at the Oaks Apartments on Water Oaks Drive around 10:45 a.m. in Raleigh. WCSO said deputies were there to carry out an eviction order and the man refused to leave. He barricaded himself inside the apartment, sparking a standoff that lasted into the early evening.

Investigators evacuated neighboring apartments as a precaution.

Officers surrounded the apartment complex and worked for nearly seven hours to get the man out.

Around 5:30 p.m., police entered the apartment to enforce the eviction order and evict the man. During the attempt to remove him, a deputy fired his weapon, injuring the man, WCSO said in a news release Tuesday.

The Wake County Sheriff's Office said the man was taken to WakeMed with serious injuries.

Neither the man nor the deputy who shot him have been identified.

It was a distressing day for those who live in this community. Everyone was finally able to return home at nightfall.

Nancy Wingate discovered the commotion at her northeast Raleigh apartment complex while she was at work. She then realized that she knew the man who had been shot by the police.

“He lives right across the street from me. He's been here about 10 years, yeah,” Wingate said.

She said she hadn't seen him in a while. She saw him heading towards the trash area a few months ago.
