Radio-frequency directed energy weapon targets drones

The UK-designed and built system – which can neutralize a swarm of drones – is designed to provide battlefield protection for the UK armed forces. It can also be used for defense of critical resources and bases.

By broadcasting radio waves to disrupt or damage critical electronic components of enemy vehicles, it can detect, track and engage threats on land, in the air and at sea. It can affect targets up to 1 km away, with subsequent developments expanding the scope of operation.

The RFDEW beam is described as a cost-effective alternative to traditional missile-based air defense systems, and the high level of automation means the system itself can be operated by a single person.

The technology is being developed by a joint team from DSTL and Defense Equipment & Support (DE&S), working with UK industry as part of Project Hersa.

“These revolutionary systems will provide a decisive operational advantage to the UK armed forces, saving lives and defeating deadly threats,” said Paul Hollinshead, chief executive of DSTL.

“Such world-class capabilities are only possible thanks to decades of research, expertise and investment in science and technology at DSTL and our UK industry partners.”

The next stages of the radio-frequency directed energy weapon are undergoing extensive field testing with British soldiers over the summer, DSTL says.
