Radford City Fire/EMS reports no injuries in massive residential fire on Custis St.

RADFORD, Va. (WFXR) – Radford City Fire and EMS is reporting no injuries after a residential fire on Custis St on Thursday, June 13.

According to firefighters, crews were dispatched to the scene at 3:30 p.m. and observed smoke coming from the roof and rear of the house. Units received reports of a person trapped inside the basement and staff immediately searched the home. Fortunately, no one was found.


Crews then transitioned to a fire attack and worked to extinguish the flames as they moved through the structure. By entering the attic, the firefighters were forced to evacuate due to a risk of fire linked to the deterioration of the structure.

The fire department says the intense heat and difficulty of the fire, combined with the hot weather, led firefighters to fatigue quickly and require rehabilitation before returning to work. In response, the crews of Snowville Vol. Fire Department, Fairlawn Fire Department and a Newbern Aerial Truck Vol. The firefighters were asked for additional personnel.

Ventilation holes were drilled into the roof to help improve conditions and allow personnel to return to the structure and possibly extinguish the fire. Crews carried out an extensive redesign of the structure, made more difficult due to the building's materials and construction techniques.

Crews remained on scene for four hours and reported no injuries to civilians or firefighters.
