Public records offer few details about Airport Road shooting

It is still unclear who was shot or why.

WASHINGTON — A copy of additional service call logs obtained by The Southeast Iowa Union shed light on an incident that left one person shot Wednesday morning, but many questions remain unanswered.

Two of the CFS documents were not included in the county's daily call log summary Wednesday, but were obtained through a public records request. They showed a total of 15 county and city officers dispatched to 2705 Airport Road early on the morning of May 29, with the first five arriving at 12:51 a.m., just six minutes after a 911 call came in. The type of call was classified as a weapons violation.

According to that report, the caller stated that “someone (was) breaking the windows of her RV,” at 2705 Airport Road, and “informed that the man in the RV with her had been shot in the abdomen.

The last officers on scene left around 7:05 a.m., according to the dispatch report. The CFS log from Thursday morning indicates that the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation assisted three of those agents in executing a search warrant on the same property around 5 a.m. Wednesday, but did not clarify the scope or the objective of the mandate.

Involvement of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is not uncommon. The state agency has assisted local police with shooting-related investigations in the past, including an investigation in Washington last October that damaged a vehicle but resulted in no injuries. DCI also frequently assists county and city departments with drug-related laboratory testing, public official-related investigations, and allegations of foster care neglect.

While the Airport Road incident remains under investigation, law enforcement officials have been reluctant to comment. Questions remain about who was shot, why someone might have broken the RV's windows or what the connection is between these events. Police have not publicly announced any charges or arrests related to the incident as of 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

The male subject was hospitalized for his injury in Iowa City and was in stable condition as of 11 a.m. Wednesday, according to a county news release.

Hours before the reported gunshot wound, a police officer went to the same address for a welfare check on a person who a caller said had been “possibly assaulted.” It was shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to a dispatch log, which indicates the parties involved were separated, but no charges were filed.

It's unclear how – or if – this incident was related to the call about an RV at the same address early the next morning.
