Public input needed for potential entertainment district near Katy Rice Dryers

The City of Katy is seeking public input this weekend for a potential entertainment district near the historic Katy Rice Drying Mills.

The overview

In the process of creating the city's 2040 Comprehensive Plan, planning firm Kendig Keast Collaborative developed a future land use and character map in March 2023, which noted three potential mixed-use areas, including including the KT Entertainment District mixed-use area north of the highway. 90 near the Katy Rice Dryers, community development director Ian Clowes said in an email.

At a Jan. 8 meeting, the Katy City Council signed an $85,000 agreement with KKC to create a plan for the proposed district, Impact on the community reported.

Other suggested mixed-use areas include the Boardwalk District and the Main Street mixed-use area in south-central Katy, according to the comprehensive plan.

To be involved

Residents are invited to stop by the city's booth during Katy Market Day this Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to share their thoughts and suggestions regarding the proposed entertainment district around the dryers, according to a Facebook post from the city.

Those who are unable to attend the Saturday Market Day event are encouraged to send general questions and comments to [email protected].

Next steps

The draft plan is expected to be completed by the end of summer and will go to the City Council for final approval this fall, Clowes said.
