Probably scam! Beware of fake calls from the Guilford Co Sheriff.

There's a fake call with someone posing as Guilford County Sheriff Danny Rogers.

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — On Tuesday, Sheriff Danny Rogers reported a scam call involving someone pretending to be him, and to make the call even more real, they mentioned Guilford County District Court , Judge Brian Tomlin.

Judge Tomlin became aware of the scam and reported it to the sheriff's office.

This scam is similar to a few the bureau has encountered and reported to the public.

The fake caller said he was calling from the Guilford County Sheriff's Office and that the victim in the call failed to show up for jury duty after being summoned by the clerk's office.

The caller falsely claimed that local judge Tomlin had issued an order for the victim's arrest and fined him $2,000 for failing to perform his jury duty. The fake caller attempted to extort money from the victim by asking her to pay the fine electronically or through gift cards to avoid arrest.

The sheriff's office said it will not use phone calls to demand payment of court fines by electronic means, Bitcoin or gift cards. Let's say you are contacted by phone by someone claiming to be a Guilford County sheriff's deputy regarding an arrest order or warrant. In this case, you can verify if the call is genuine by contacting the Sheriff's Office Warrants Team at 336-641-2727.
