Pro-Palestinian student protests | 6 pro-Palestinian protesters arrested at UNC-CH to appear in court

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) — Six pro-Palestinian protesters arrested at UNC-Chapel Hill face serious charges and are expected in court Thursday morning.

Hearings begin at 9 a.m. at the Orange County Courthouse.

These arrests took place on April 30 in the quad of the UNC campus. Police officers moved to disperse a pro-Palestinian demonstration and encampment.

The university said protesters who had been present for several days began violating university policy. They were asked to leave and received several warnings.

Three of the six arrested demonstrators went to the UNC.

In total, 36 protesters were arrested and thirty of them were cited for trespassing and released on site. Ten of them were UNC-Chapel Hill students.

Emi Abe-teh, Stephen Sandor, Gurnoor Majhail and Tashia Ethridge were arrested and charged with resisting, obstructing and delaying law enforcement and trespassing. Jackson Prause and Owen Stone face the same charges in addition to assaulting a law enforcement officer.

“They were charged with more serious offenses, frankly. And so, they were brought before the magistrate, but then they were released once they had the magistrate and those who were charged with less serious offenses were cited,” Orange County District Attorney Jeff said. » said Niéman.

Further research revealed that investigators accused Stone of using a drum to beat a North Carolina State Trooper who was participating in the arrest Tuesday morning.

The ABC11 I-Team obtained UNC Chapel Hill Dean's List records for Abe-teh, Sandor and Prause.

Both Majhail and Ethridge are named in-line as Duke students.
