Princeton man sentenced to life in prison for repeat offense

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – A habitual offender in Caddo Parish has been sentenced to life in prison.

The Caddo Parish District Attorney's Office said Jermaine Owens, 40, of Princeton, was convicted in January of assault and unlawful possession of a firearm. Thursday June 6, he was sentenced to life in prison.

The DA's office says Owens, also known as Jermaine Allen, was convicted as a habitual fourth offender for possession of a firearm or carrying a concealed weapon by a person convicted of domestic violence . His sentence will be served without benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence. This sentence was handed down by District Judge Ramona Emmanuel. For misdemeanor simple assault, Owens was sentenced to 90 days in parish jail with credit for time served. The sentences must be served concurrently.

Officials say on April 4, 2023, Shreveport officers responded to a domestic dispute in the 8500 block of Chalmette Drive. It's off the E Kings Highway, south of LSUS. Officers who responded to the scene found that Owens had pointed a gun at his wife and said, “I'm going to kill you.” Owens also pushed his wife and continued to yell that he would kill her while pointing the gun at her. Police found the gun in a backpack used by Owens, who tried to run away during questioning. The police chased him, used a Taser on him and managed to subdue him.

After conducting a background check, officers learned that Owens had a prior conviction for domestic violence, meaning he is not allowed to own or have in his possession a firearm. He was arrested for domestic violence, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm or carrying a concealed weapon by a person convicted of domestic violence.

The DA's office says Owens has three prior felony convictions, making this his fourth. Other priors were armed robbery on January 29, 2007, attempted armed robbery on March 5, 2007, and possession of Schedule II narcotics on March 7, 2022.
