Pregnant teen loses baby, another teen shot dead by police inside stolen vehicle linked to two carjackings

A pregnant 18-year-old woman suffered “life-threatening injuries” and lost her baby after Wisconsin police shot her during a carjacking chase.

On Thursday, June 20, Milwaukee Police Department officers “attempted to conduct a criminal stop” at approximately 2:23 p.m. local time at N. 17th Street and W. Vliet Street — in connection with what the department shared on Facebook were reports of armed robberies, carjackings.”

During the pursuit, which took place on Highway 43, the vehicle was “blocked by construction and a cement truck” in a construction lane. The officers ordered the suspects to get out, but the driver “reversed and struck a marked police car.”

“The suspect driver drove forward and then reversed. A police officer was behind the vehicle. At that point, another officer fired his firearm into the vehicle, subsequently striking two suspects. A total of six suspects were in the vehicle,” the statement said. Remarks.

A 17-year-old boy was also “seriously injured,” police said, and the two injured suspects were “transported to local hospitals for treatment.” The other suspects, aged 15 to 18, were treated for minor injuries.

Milwaukee police said the 25-year-old officer “involved” had four years of service and would be placed on “administrative duty,” which is “routine in an officer-involved shooting.”

A firearm was recovered from the vehicle, which was determined to be stolen, according to the department's Facebook statement. Milwaukee Journal SentinelCiting a news conference by Police Chief Jeffrey Norman, it was unclear whether the suspects fired any shots Thursday afternoon.

One woman told ABC television station WISN that she “definitely heard gunshots,” although she didn't know “who fired first.” “There were just a few at once,” she added.

Norman noted that both victims of the carjacking were “fine” — those that took place before the pursuit at the 500 block of N. Broadway and the 500 block of N. Jefferson Street.

“We have several young people involved in unacceptable behavior in this city. This is unacceptable,” Norman said, according to the Sentinel Journal“Parents, what’s happening with your children? As members of our community, how are we helping our children adopt positive behaviors, rather than the ones we see today?”

“This should never have happened. (…) There are no winners in this particular situation,” he continued. “So I ask the community to take our children and welcome them in a positive way, encourage them to adopt positive behaviors and not unacceptable behaviors like the ones we saw today.”

The department also said “criminal charges will be referred” to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office and that the incident is being investigated by the Milwaukee Area Investigation Team, the West Allis Police Department directing law enforcement in the “ongoing investigation.”

The prosecutor's office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for more information on Friday.

Citing police data, NBC News noted that carjackings in the city increased 16% from 2022 to 2023, from 398 to 463.
