PPD: 1 dead in shooting on High Street

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A man is dead after being shot Thursday afternoon on High Street in Portsmouth, police said.

Police said the shooting happened in the 2400 block of High Street around 2:25 p.m. and when officers arrived, they found a man, later identified as Rahsaan Nixon, who had left the scene after being shot. Crime scene video showed a strip of tape in front of the Essex Food Mart.

Store employees told police the shooting happened after an altercation with a man who tried to steal items from the store, police said.

Nixon was taken to a local hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

Portsmouth police said their major crimes unit has opened a criminal investigation into the shooting.
