Poway SWAT standoff ends peacefully; suspect in custody

POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) — A man was involved in an altercation with sheriff's deputies in Poway Saturday, leading to a temporary road closure and air support.

Officers responded to a call about an altercation around 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the 13000 block of York Avenue, near the intersection of Scots Way, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. The SWAT team was also called to the scene, authorities confirmed.

“You may be able to see and hear our ASTREA helicopter unit making announcements overhead. There is no immediate danger to the public,” the ministry said.

Authorities have closed York Avenue between Edgemoor Street and Scots Way. Residents are advised to avoid the area due to increased law enforcement activity.

On Saturday at 8:51 p.m., the SWAT standoff ended peacefully and the man was arrested without incident, the sheriff said in a social media post. York Avenue has reopened.

A description of the suspect was not immediately available and it was unclear whether the man was believed to be armed. The cause of the disruption was unclear.
