Potter County Sheriff's Office Warns of Community Scam Call

POTTER COUNTY, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The Potter County Sheriff's Office warned community members of a scam reported Tuesday in which a scammer may falsely claim that a community member could do the subject to an outstanding arrest warrant for failing to provide a DNA sample.

According to the sheriff's office, a community member reported receiving a call informing him that he had an outstanding arrest warrant for failing to provide a DNA sample and that he owed $2,000 to avoid arrest. The scammer allegedly pretended to be Lt. Langwell of the Potter County Sheriff's Office.

Officials warned community members that reported calls and others are scams because the sheriff's office “will never contact anyone to charge them to get out of a warrant or ask a member for money of this community.”

Additionally, officials advised community members who are unsure about a call they receive to hang up and contact the allegedly connected agency directly at the number provided on the agency's official website. For example, in the case of the Potter County Sheriff's Office, community members should call 806-379-2900.
