Possibly rabid black bear found and killed near Elkins

HARPERTOWN, W.Va (WDTV) – A black bear displaying signs suggestive of rabies was found and disposed of in Randolph County Monday evening.

Deputies with the Randolph County Sheriff's Office were called to Harpertown after a deformed-looking bear attempted to enter a home. He was found on the terrace behind the house when the police arrived.

Authorities say it was clear the animal was distressed, emaciated and “clearly suffering from physical issues as well as a mangy coat.” His gums and teeth were discolored and his fur was almost completely worn off around his face and stomach. The bear's approximate age was not specified, but it did not appear to have reached adult size.

The animal was shot dead by one of the officers present on site.

The Division of Natural Resources was called to take the bear and test it for rabies and other debilitating diseases.

Authorities warn that if you see an animal acting strangely in your area, call 911 immediately.

At this time, it is not known what illness(es) the bear was suffering from, or whether other bears in the area may be affected.

According to the state Department of Health and Human Resources, West Virginia has about 100 cases of animal rabies per year. The most common rabid animals are raccoons, skunks, foxes and bats.
