Portales man sentenced to more than 19 years in prison for “child abuse” and 4 counts of “assault and battery against a peace officer”

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Ninth Judicial District Attorney Quentin Ray announced that a Portales man was sentenced to more than 19 years in prison for several crimes, including “child abuse” and four counts of “battery against the peace”. Officer.”

According to the prosecutor's office, the first incident occurred on February 13, 2022, when Alfonso Pérez got angry with his girlfriend's seven-year-old child and beat him with a belt, leaving behind bruises. Authorities said the child's buttocks, ears, head, arms and legs were covered in bruises.


The statement said that a few days later, the child's grandmother observed dark purple bruising after picking him up from school. The grandmother reported the abuse to Nikolas Sánchez of the Portales police. Sanchez then filed a “child abuse” complaint against Perez.

On June 9, 2022, while awaiting trial on child abuse charges at the Roosevelt County Adult Detention Center, Perez was observed in his cell forcing himself to vomit and was also coughing up blood.

Officials said the officers tried to enter his cell to give him help, but Perez kept his cell door closed.

The prosecutor's office said when officers entered the cell, Perez punched three and continued to fight after using a Taser and OC spray. Perez also knocked a Taser out of an officer's hand.

Officials said his 19 1/2-year sentence included a customary enhancement of each charge. The court determined that each count constitutes a serious violent offense and therefore he will have to serve 85% of the time.
