Police take suspect into custody after confrontation near Show Low

The shooting happened early Monday morning near U.S. 60 and Apache County Road.

SHOW LOW, Ariz. — A suspect is in custody after an hours-long standoff with law enforcement that began Sunday evening and continued through the night into Monday, officials said.

Initial reports said the suspect was barricaded near U.S. 60 and Apache County Road and was shooting at White Mountain Police and Apache County Sheriff's Office deputies.

Around 8:50 p.m., authorities called in a SWAT team from the Department of Public Safety, beginning a lengthy negotiation process.

The suspect began shooting at the SWAT team around 2:40 a.m., and the team returned fire. It is unclear whether the suspect was shot during this exchange.

The suspect was then taken into custody and taken to a Phoenix area hospital for treatment. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

DPS will handle the investigation. Authorities have not released details about the identity of the suspect or what led up to the situation.
