Police shoot, kill armed man in Brentwood after chase

BRENTWOOD, Pa. (KDKA) — An officer shot and killed a Brentwood man after a chase in the South Hills Wednesday evening, according to Allegheny County police.

County police said the incident began around 5 p.m. when a county officer saw a stolen vehicle on Brownsville Road in South Park. The officer attempted to stop the black Nissan Rogue, which initially stopped before speeding away, police said. Officers said they stopped following the vehicle and terminated the attempted traffic stop.

“It's kind of disturbing. It's a very quiet neighborhood. There's not really much going on in Brentwood,” Ken Kornick said.

About six minutes later, county police said Brentwood officers found the vehicle on Route 51 and initiated a pursuit. During the chase, police said the suspect crashed into a Brentwood police vehicle along Laveton Road.

“The officer got into a physical struggle with the suspect. During that struggle, he discovered the suspect was armed with a handgun,” said Allegheny County Police Superintendent Chris Kearns.

A short time later, police said the suspect ran from the vehicle along Check Way. Officers ran after the suspect and during a struggle with a Brentwood officer, police said they saw the suspect had a gun.

“The physical struggle continued and during this confrontation, the officer fired several rounds, striking the suspect,” Superintendent Kearns added.

“All of a sudden we heard a bang bang,” said resident Jana Faust. “We saw that the suspect had been shot. [He was] lying there, and the cops were trying to give him CPR. I couldn't take it and left.”

The suspect was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not been revealed. He was found to have a gun on him, police said.

“Unfortunately, this is where society has come,” said resident Bill Sorochman. “What now? What's happening now in our little community? Brentwood is a small, close-knit community.”

Allegheny County police said the incident lasted only 10 minutes between the chase and the shooting. Superintendent Kearns says he believes the officer was wearing a body camera.

Brentwood police called the county police homicide unit and detectives from there are investigating.
