Police rescue 17 Indonesian human trafficking victims

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 (Bernama) — Police yesterday rescued 17 Indonesian women suspected of being victims of human trafficking during a raid on the dormitory of a maid service company in Shah Alam, Selangor .

All the victims were rescued under Section 44(1) of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants (ATIPSOM) Act, 2007, said SAC unit deputy head Soffian Santong of the Department of Bukit Aman Criminal Investigations (CID) D3 ATIPSOM.

He said all the victims, aged between 25 and 45, were rescued as part of Operation Pintas at 9:30 p.m.

Sofian said the operation was carried out after receiving information about the existence of forced labor against the victims, who were given jobs as domestic servants, but some of whom were exploited without pay.

“A preliminary investigation revealed that all of these victims worked for between six months and two years with employers and some victims complained that they never received a salary,” he said today.

Soffian said three men, aged 31 to 40, who acted as employers and supervisors to send the cleaners to work, were also arrested in the raid and will be investigated in under article 12 of the ATIPSOM law of 2007.
