Police radio recordings show aftermath of deadly UC shooting

CINCINNATI (WXIX) — Police released radio traffic from Monday morning's shooting near UC in which police said three people were killed and two others injured.

Officers patrolling near the scene at Highland and East University avenues heard gunshots and were able to respond quickly, according to Cincinnati Police Department Capt. Mark Burns.

One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, three others were taken to a nearby hospital where a second victim was confirmed dead. A third person was confirmed dead Monday afternoon.

“I get a man in a wheelchair who says it's self-defense,” one officer said. “He says he was hit. I think I have a victim I'm keeping an eye on.”

Another officer said: “I have two victims, both on the ground, unconscious and with four guns.”

One man, who declined to give his name, said he has lived at the intersection for nearly 40 years. He added that these incidents “don't happen in this neighborhood.” He said he saw the immediate aftermath of the shooting.

“We often get notifications on campus about events going on,” the man said. “It helps us and reminds us to be attentive. The world is broken, sad things are happening and it’s hard.”

No arrests have been made. Police at the scene said they saw a man running into a house with a gun.

“This person came out voluntarily,” police said on the radio. “We don't know if he was the shooter (or) if he was hiding a weapon. We have no idea.”

The CPD Homicide Unit is investigating the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 513-352-3040.
