Police officer arrested Friday didn't work on details he was paid to do | Crime/Police

A New Orleans police officer was arrested Friday afternoon after investigators say he was paid for security details at Walmart that he never worked on.

Christopher Jennings, 42, was jailed on six counts of theft, six counts of tampering with public records and one count of malfeasance in office following an investigation by the Office of public integrity of the New Orleans Police Department.

Jennings, while employed as a senior NOPD police officer, allegedly failed to show up to six details that he was scheduled to work at three separate Walmart locations across the city. Yet, detectives say, he was paid for the work.

Jennings would call him into his presence and sign, but would never be present for the shift itself, police alleged in court records. According to records filed in Criminal District Court, the NOPD became aware of Jennings' alleged malfeasance when officers who introduced themselves to the two men told the police secondary employment office that they had been working alone.

The Office of Public Integrity, an internal review board, says it used surveillance footage to confirm that Jennings was not present during the details. A license plate reader on Jennings' patrol car revealed that he was often in Jefferson Parish when he was supposed to be on duty in Orleans Parish. Phone records also followed him away from where the details were located, documents state.

“It should be noted that Officer Jennings was compensated for working at the senior level each time and abandoned his responsibilities by intentionally failing to report to the two-man group, potentially endangering the safety of the lone officer on scene,” reads an affidavit for an arrest warrant for Jennings.

Jennings is the second NOPD officer arrested this week. Korey Jones, 35, is accused of using a department fuel card to fill up his personal car and was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center on Wednesday on charges of malfeasance in office, theft and fraud. access devices. Jones was released on his own recognizance.

Jennings awaits a bond hearing Saturday afternoon.
