Police: Man involved in Export shooting was growing marijuana in basement

A man who police say was involved in a fatal shooting in Export Tuesday is facing drug charges after officers discovered several marijuana plants in his basement.

Matthew A. Miller, 32, was taken into custody Tuesday after a shooting that resulted in the death of 65-year-old Daniel Chicka. The shooting happened around 2 p.m. in the 5800 block of Madison Avenue in Export.

While investigating, police obtained a warrant to search Miller's Export home, where officers found 20 marijuana plants and drug paraphernalia in Miller's basement, according to a criminal complaint.

In court documents, Miller is listed as having an address in Hempfield, on Middletown Road. But state police said he was the only occupant of the Madison Avenue home in Export. He was denied bail by Judge Judi Petrush, who noted in court records that Miller had ties to Arizona and did not have a stable residence.

Online court records show no charges against Miller related to the shooting, which state police said was the result of a months-long parking dispute between Miller and Chicka.

Miller was charged with drug possession with intent to manufacture or deliver, and possession of drug paraphernalia, and is being held at the Westmoreland County Jail. A preliminary hearing is set for July 2 in the Petrush Export Court.
