Fort Wayne Police Chief Responds to Holton Avenue Shooting Investigation



FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) – A police presence near the city's southeast occurred after a suspected burglary led to the shooting of a police officer this evening.

Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) Chief Scott Caudill confirmed that a police officer was shot during a search for two burglary suspects, which began around 4:45 p.m. on Holton Avenue.

Police said the search began with two officers responding to a call about a suspected burglary in progress at a home in the 4700 block of Holton Avenue.

Police said once en route to the house, the caller informed them that the two suspects had a gun and a knife and had moved into the detached garage on the property before officers arrived .

As police searched for the two suspects, they noticed the detached garage also had a broken window when officers heard gunshots and returned fire.

Police said they repeatedly heard an officer announce that “shots had been fired” over the radio as gunshots rang out in the background.

Police sent two officers to the scene after hearing the radio, where they noticed one of the officers had been shot in the arm.

Police said the officer was taken in non-life-threatening condition by emergency medical services to a local hospital.

Police said they recovered a firearm from one of the suspects after he dropped it as he fled the scene.

Around 7:58 p.m., Fort Wayne police said they arrested an adult suspect suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach near the 1300 block of Fairfax Avenue.

The Fort Wayne Police Department is still investigating the burglary and, as is the case with officer-involved shootings, the Indiana State Police Department will investigate with a review by the State's Attorney's Office. Allen County.

Assistance from the Allen County Police Department, Indiana State Police and New Haven Police assisted in the ongoing case.
