Police investigate shooting in Jefferson County Family Court

The Birmingham Police Department is investigating after the Jefferson County Family Court building was shot at.

The shooting happened Thursday morning around 9 a.m.

A woman inside was injured by broken glass from the gunfire, but no other injuries were reported. The woman is expected to be fine.

Police say the preliminary investigation suggests an unknown suspect(s) shot someone, possibly from the parking lot. Police believe the incident is isolated and not related to any official or function at the courthouse.

Natasha Gray was inside the building when the incident occurred.

“The moment I heard the shooting, we just tried to run for cover,” Gray described feeling scared and fearful.

Gray also said it was unexpected, “not in a place of business like this, but nowadays shootings happen everywhere.”

Gray agrees the situation could have been much worse, especially with the families and children who were in the building.

“A child could have been hit, an elderly person, anyone, it could have been me, any of us could have been hit,” she said.

Gray wants to see an end to the violence in Birmingham.

“I’m sick of it, the whole community is sick of it,” Gray said. “Children being killed by stray bullets, elderly people being killed by stray bullets, innocent bystanders being killed by stray bullets, that makes no sense to me. It's sickening.”

No one is in custody following this shooting.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the BPD Criminal Assault Unit at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
