Police investigate reported armed robbery of teenager at Independence Park | FOX 4 Kansas City WDAF-TV

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – For the second week in a row, Independence Police are investigating a reported gun incident at a local park. Once again, a minor was the target. This time, the teen's parents were upset. It took police seven hours to respond to the reported theft at Hill Park Pavilion in the skatepark area.

A 17-year-old boy told police he was robbed at gunpoint in the park near East 23rd Street around 7:30 Sunday evening. His mother posted on social media to warn others about the incident.

“As she described what her son had said to her, I was like, oh my God, I saw thathas,” a neighbor told FOX4 on Tuesday, although she said at the time she didn't realize what was happening and looked away before the incident was over.

Police say the victim and her family called police approximately 20 minutes later at 7:54 p.m. Independence Police determined the call was no longer in progress and no threat remained. active. A police officer was dispatched to the boy's home to make a report approximately 7 hours later, at 2:47 a.m. Monday morning. Police said officers were dispatched according to their emergency priority level.

“That would explain why it took them so long, but seven hours is a long time to wait,” skateboarder Eric Laurion said.

“It would be one thing if there was no gun and he was robbed when they had a gun,” the neighbor pointed out.

The suspect was described as a black man, between 6’5″ and 6’7″ tall, with bleached dreads and wearing an Adidas jacket. At the skate park, where summer fun begins on the rails, regulars hope the scary crime doesn't put an end to the party.

“The theft took place not far from the park. Therefore, moms will be excluded and some children will not be able to go out,” said skateboarder Braeden Thomas.

“We are a family here, we teach others, we work together, it would be a shame to lose some of that.” Laurion said.

Sunday evening, May 26, Independence Police were called to Rock Creek Trail near Rotary Park when a group of children, one as young as 6, reported being shot . Independence Police updated FOX4 Tuesday saying they have not been able to locate any shell casings in that area.
