Police identify woman fatally shot in St. Pete apartment, suspect still at large

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Police say a woman was fatally shot at a St. Petersburg apartment complex early Tuesday morning.

The St. Petersburg Police Department said officers responded to a call about a shooting at the Lake Pointe Apartments Reserve located on Lynn Lake Drive South around 6 a.m.

When they arrived, they found the woman, later identified as 25-year-old Yvonne Abernathy. Police said Abernathy lived in the complex and was shot in the hallway outside her apartment.

Abernathy is deceased and the suspect is not in custody, according to authorities.

“We had K9 here, we had a huge response and we checked the entire complex trying to find the shooter, and that search was over. We didn't find him,” the spokeswoman said. St. Pete police, Yolanda Fernandez.

Police were interviewing witnesses earlier Tuesday morning.

“We still need to speak to all the witnesses to determine whether or not the victim knew the suspect, but they were together outside the apartment shortly before 6 a.m. this morning,” Fernandez said. “That's all we know right now, and we know that she was shot and killed at the scene, and it was an apartment that she shared with a family member.”

In just four months, a new Florida law would ban people from sleeping in public spaces or parks. State leaders who support the bill say it will help push people who need help into shelters and programs, but Aaron Swift of the Homeless Leadership Alliance of Pinellas said it could cause more problems.
